Biography

Research interests

Broadly within the rubric of economic geography, my interests include resource management, economic development, urban geography, environmental policy analysis, economics applied to public policy, questions of sustainability, and governance.

Biography

I have undertaken research at a variety of scales. At the national level, my PhD research considered the influence of the idea of globalisation on policy-making in New Zealand, focusing on the emergence and impact of the Labour Government’s Growth and Innovation Framework. I then undertook a comparative study at Lancaster University in the UK, analysing the effect of regionally-implemented competitiveness policies introduced by the Blair Government, using the North-West of England and Greater London as case studies. Returning to NZ, I undertook short term research contracts at the Auckland Regional Council for AucklandPlus, the regional economic development agency; and Auckland City Council in the Economic Development Unit scoping the Auckland labour market. These experiences provided me with an understanding of how different levels of governance operate and articulate together.

I am now working on an 18 month initiative of The University of Auckland on the development of the wine industry and wine tourism on Waiheke Island. The project is considering the place of Waiheke Island in the wider Auckland regional economy and the national wine economy, and the development potential and effects of wine tourism. The research has also provided insights into change and development on the urban fringe of Auckland, with implications for local governance with the impending amalgamation of councils in Auckland into a unitary 'super city'.

I am now also working as project manager at the Committee for Auckland, where I am coordinating the Auckland Anchors project.
