Teaching Interests

My teaching interests are in the fields of Economic Geography and social science Research Methods. Within economic geography I am particularly interested in: industrial organisation and location; global commodity chains; international trade and economic integration. The focus of my teaching is to understand the contemporary global economy and its roots in regions and communities. I believe that the study of research methods are an essential feature of University education, and I encourage students to develop and practise these in their courses. Analytical and communication skills in particular, are important ingredients for successful careers and in Geography we put great emphasis on them.

Research Interests

My research interests lie in the field of economic geography and span the following, interrelated topics:

Industrial organisation – using commodity chains analysis in particular, to examine the organisation of production systems, the flows of value in supply chains and the systemic effects of regulation.

International trade – in particular, the impacts upon trade of international trade agreements and economic integration.

Regional economic development – New Zealand and the United States, in particular.

European economic integration – especially the impacts of European Union policy.
