My research uses the petrology of volcanic materials to understand the way that magmatic systems work on a variety of time scales. The principle is that variations in the mineralogy and chemistry of magmas erupted from volcanoes through time reflect variations in the processes of magma production and modification at deeper levels in the system. The basis of this research is detailed sampling of sequences of deposits in individual volcanoes coupled with study of their mineralogy and chemical compositions. The results lead to a better understanding of the way volcanoes work and of the hazards presented by their eruptive activity.
